How Asthma Is Diagnosed

Asthma can affect someone of any age. Medical science has devised a new terminology to distinguish those who have had asthma since they
were children and those who began as adults. Those who developed asthma as adults are classified as late-onset asthmatics or LOA.
Regardless of the age of onset, the diagnostic process should include a detailed medical history, chest X ray, lung function tests,
and perhaps an examination of the phlegmlike secretions. In addition, allergy tests are usually necessary. As for the complementary medical

History
A diagnosis of asthma cannot be made from one test or even a series of tests. It is more a diagnosis by history. That is why it is important
to give your doctor a proper history of the following:
1. When do these events occur?
2. Are they triggered by certain things?
3. When did the symptoms first start?
4. How long do the symptoms last?
5. What do you do to make the symptoms better?
6. Is there a certain time of the year when they are worse?

These and many other questions are the cornerstones in obtaining the proper diagnosis. Chest X ray: This is a simple test, and in patients with asthma it can show hyperinflation. This means that there is too much air in the lungs. However, that is nondiagnostic, and that same picture
can be seen in other lung conditions. In newly diagnosed patients it is important to get a chest X ray to make sure there are no other treatable lung conditions that could be causing the same symptoms, such as pneumonia or cancer.

Sputum evaluation: This test examines your sputum and looks for a certain type of white blood cell known as eosinophils. This is
the type of cell that increases when there is an allergic response to a trigger.

Complete blood count (CBC): This is a test of the red and white blood cells. We particularly look at eosinophils and total
white blood cell count. If the white blood cell count is elevated, this could indicate an infection such as bronchitis or pneumonia, rather than asthma. It is another test to rule out any other underlying causes for your symptoms. If the eosinphil count is increased, your asthma has a strong allergic component.

Pulmonary function tests (PFT): Most people with asthma are familiar with these tests. They involve blowing into a machine to measure the degree of obstruction present. The simplest of these tests is known as a peak flow rate test and is measured with a peak flow meter. This works by you inhaling as deeply as you can, and then blowing into this meter as hard and as fast as possible. The meter measures the maximum
speed with which air can be forced out of the lungs. If your breathing tubes are blocked, the speed is reduced and you
get a reduced peak flow rate.

Conventional allergy testing: This includes percutaneous, intradermal,
in vitro antibody (RAST) testing, and delayed hypersensitivity
testing, as described in chapter 1.
